A plugin typically uses .claude-plugin/plugin.json for its identity. Its skills, commands, agent definitions and tool configuration live beside that manifest. A marketplace tells Claude Code where to fetch the package; it is not the package itself.
An enabled plugin can contribute context and background processes even when you do not invoke it. Start with one clear use case, inspect the source and prerequisites, and prefer a local install scope while evaluating it.
